Elena helps Damon to overcome his demons and make him feel human again while Damon inspires Elena, challenging and making her question who she really is. Eventually, Elena realizes she is in love with Damon, but is reluctant and unwilling to admit her feelings even though everyone is aware of their obvious feelings for each other from friends to enemies. Despite realizing her true feelings for Damon and while she is well aware of his mutual feelings for her, Elena tries to bury her feelings and stay loyal to Stefan.

When getting ready to leave, Damon wanted to Link wait a day to tell Stefan about them being a couple, and Elena, of course, eventually agreed. Stefan showed up as she was leaving Salvatore Mansion.

He hands Elena the White Oak Stake and tells her to kill Caroline or else he will and ensure Caroline a painful death. Elena pretends to stake Caroline, but attacks Alaric instead. She sees a cup filled with vervain solution sitting on his desk and splashes it all over his face, giving her enough time to free Caroline. Caroline manages to escape, but Alaric recovers, blocking the classroom door.

It leaves Damon with no choice, who has to let his brother go forever. In some ways, Elena is considered to be the opposite of Katherine. In terms of blood consumption, Elena wants to live on a diet of animal blood, like Stefan, in an attempt to avoid hurting someone. However, after she is unable to keep down animal blood, human blood from a blood bag or vampire blood, she begins to feed from Matt. It is discovered that her inability to consume other sources of blood was unintentionally due to her sire bond with Damon, and eventually begins to live on a diet of blood bags from a human blood bank. Now that Elena is a vampire, her feelings are magnified, including her feelings for Damon, and they’re much harder for her to ignore and push aside.
